Behind the Silver Microphone
Stephen Greenwood

Stephen Greenwood announces the BrunchTime and Light Music programs every Thursday and the breakfast Morning Melodies program every second Friday, as well as The Year That Was every Thursday. He became involved with Silver Memories after his wife gave him a 4MBS Radio Announcers course for Christmas in 2013, and after many months hosting there, he started helping out at Silver Memories.
Stephen was born in Chatswood in New South Wales, but grew up in Brisbane when his father was appointed as the Professor of History at the University of Queensland in 1949. Stephen’s mother loved classical music and she opened that world up for her son, as well as the music of the great tenors and sopranos, popular crooners, big band music, jazz and folk songs. At school, he learned the ballads of Pat Boone and the songs of Peter Dawson. In 1958 Stephen was delighted to receive a copy of Paul Anka’s song, Diana, for his 10th birthday, and in 1963 he remembers hearing the Beatles for the first time. He had never heard such a sound before and knew the world of popular music was about to change.
Over the years, Stephen worked in the Australian Public Service in Canberra, in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet during the Hawke and Keating years. Later, Stephen became CEO of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia until his retirement in 2006, when he became a freelance journalist, writing histories and articles for pharmacy journals.
