Behind the Silver Microphone
Peter McCahon

Peter McCahon does relief announcing for Silver Memories in the mornings. Peter began working as a volunteer Classical Music announcer for 4MBS and subsequently was appointed 4MBS Program Manager, a role he continues in today. In 2015, Peter’s role was expanded to include responsibilities for managing the “sounds” of Silver Memories. Peter bases his Silver Memories music selections on his memories of the popular music he listened to while growing up in the 1950s and 1960s.
Peter didn’t grow up in a musical family. He first realised music was important to him when he was about 10 years old. Peter’s father built him a crystal set and music and radio serials quickly became part of his everyday life. Music has become an important part of his life and he says that listening to “tuneful” music always makes him feel good.
Peter was born in Toowoomba and has had several careers including Banking, Credit Checking, Menswear Shop Proprietor and Radio Advertising Sales. He has been married for 49 years and has 5 children and 13 grandchildren.
Peter’s personal musical preferences include Classical, Operetta and Music from the 1940s and 1950s.
Peter's Top 5 Requests for Silver Memories:
1. Loveliest Night of the Year | Mario Lanza
This song reminds Peter of Saturday Matinees in Toowoomba:
